Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got, till it’s gone
- Joni Mitchell

Somehow, authoritarianism has returned.

Across the world, intolerant, illiberal parties with, at best, a thin commitment to democracy are on the rise. This represents a challenge to journalists.

Until recently the best reporting was done objectively. Where issues were controversial, the media didn’t take a side but reported the discussion. In a liberal society, this is a good principle that allows people to make up their own minds.

However, when the truth becomes controversial, it is not incumbent on the media to give nonsense an airing. Anti-science, antivax, illiberal bigotry. It leads nowhere good. Especially for those using their free speech to teach truth.

We know what side we’re on.

We’re a group of creators committed to reporting truth to the best of our abilities. And we’re starting with the threats to democracy.

The Beacon is a warning and a call for aid. A creator-led, not for profit, pro-democracy news organisation built on the idea that trustworthy information should strengthen society, not divide it.

The attention economy is a battlefield, too often left uncontested by the forces of liberalism. We’re gearing up for this fight. We want you to join us.

Our content is both free and expensive.

We are focussed on delivering useful, truthful information to as many people as possible. We don’t always have time to administer paywalls or create membership perks.

So if our mission is your mission, please support us in any way you can.
